Smelling the Past Without Hallucination

Abstract:
Odeuropa is a European research project (2021-2024) which has gathered
40 researchers from 6 European countries and had for objective to create
an encyclopedia of the odors from the past. In this talk, I will show
how we have trained models that can see and read smells. In particular,
I will present the largest knowledge graph representing more than 2.5
million olfactory references extracted from images and texts in 6
languages published between the 15th and 19th century. I will present an
exploratory search engine enabling to access this trove of data as well
as a serious game that aims to guess the smell you have in mind. I will
finally show how to talk with this historical data in a truthful manner
with historical grounded references.
